Grafting the Pupil to the Fingertip is a multilayered, collaborative project between visual artist Kylie Lockwood and Daryn R Banc-Goldhammer of the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Oregon. Focusing on investigations in perception Lockwood and Blanc-Goldhammer worked together to develop this work whose central component is a binaural audio recorder cast from the artist’s head. This sculptural devicecreates a binaural soundscape, exploring the space between a first hand experience of place and the mediation of that experience though a surrogate self. The Oregon Arts Commission’s Percent for Art in Public Places Program commissioned this work through the Third Culture Projects: a series created to invite collaborations between artists and scientists to bridge the gap between their disciplines. The work is on permanent display at the Lewis Integrative Science Building at the University of Oregon.
